Thriving at the foot of the Montgri limestone massif, the royal city of Torroella, watered by the Ter, is 6 kilometres from the sea in the beautiful Baix Empordà region. Surrounded by fertile land where fields and orchards flourish under a blazing sun, the Catalan village of Torroella de Montgri is an authentic destination, rich in a beautiful heritage only 75 kilometres from the French border.

With its typically Catalan charm, Torroella de Montgri is one of those ancient villages where everyone feels at ease instantly. Its old alleys, which follow the line of its ancient Roman wall, and its walks promise visitors beautiful walks to discover its most important buildings. The 14th century Santa Caterina Gate, the Witches' Tower, but also the Augustinian Renaissance cloister and the Sant Genis church are among the sites not to be missed. The latter, a true jewel of Gothic art, is very famous in the village. You will also need to see the magnificent arcaded square of La Vila, on which is located the chapel of Saint Antoni, and the Casa de la Vila known for its very large sundial. Not far from there, the Església promenade and its El Mirador palace (also known as the Palace of the Count of Torroella) are among the most beautiful walks to explore during your visit. Overlooking the town of Torroella de Montgri, Montgri Castle stands on a hill at the very end of Carrer Fatima. This square and massive castle with four round towers was built from 1294 to 1304, at an altitude of 315 metres: if the walk from the village (of one hour) is worth it, it is also worth it to be able to contemplate from this castle a magnificent view of the Empordà plain and the Canigou massif in the distance. During this walk, we advise you to stop at the Cave of the Duke (Cau del Duc), a tall natural ancient cave from which the panoramas are really sumptuous on the surrounding nature. If you like hiking, you should know that the Baix Ter plain, Montgri and Torroella have many itineraries adapted for all levels, whether you are fond of hiking, cycling or mountain biking, with splendid panoramas at the end of each day.

On foot or by bike, do not hesitate to head towards l'Estartit, a seaside resort renowned for its magnificent landscapes, only 6 kilometres from the centre of Torroella de Montgri: in addition to its absolutely splendid coastline, l'Estartit is the ideal place for sea excursions to the Mendes Islands, where young and old can take part in refreshing water sports such as sea kayaking, scuba diving or surfing. The immense beaches of Estartit will also offer you a wide choice of water sports: paddle yoga, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, jet skiing, kitesurfing, flyboarding, flyfish, paddle surfing, apnea, wakeboarding, wakeskiing... You will have plenty of choice to enjoy the pleasures of the Spanish coast!
