Nested at the heart of the bay bearing its name, in the Spanish province of Girona, the city of Roses (in Spanish “Rosas”) is a jewel of the Catalan coast. Fruit of a rich and eventful past, the city, whose origins can be traced back to ancient Greek colonies, benefits from a climate swayed by the north winds and the sea air. Following the Roman conquest during the Second Punic War, Roses then turned into the main port of the Empuries County from the Middle Ages onwards. The counts’ legacy is embodied in the monastery, built over the remains of the antic city in the purest Lombard Romanesque style. From the 15th century, the city began to shield itself behind imposing fortifications from the unwanted attention of the pirates and the French navy. Throughout the centuries, Roses grew as a commercial port and rapidly became an important stop during trades with the Balearic Islands, Italy and North Africa.

Several architectural treasures can be found in the city centre, such as the Santa Maria Church, built in a neoclassical style over the 18th and 19th centuries. Not far from the city hall, on the Plaça de Catalunya, three little houses of modernist style are among the hidden gems scattered around the city. Overlooking the bay, the 16th century Trinitat Castle proudly stands on the Poncella point. Beyond a rich historic heritage, its natural resources also constitute a major appeal for tourists. Spread over the rugged terrain of the Costa Brava, several lighthouses illuminate the crystal creeks. The vast beaches, equipped for modern comfort, have nonetheless maintained the wild nature of the wide natural waters. As for the seabed, accessible from the many boats dedicated to marine observation, its precious treasures patiently await your visit.
